We all, as a collective, grew up drinking local or imported flavoured lemonades and sodas, but with years and travelling one develops a certain palate and you want more than overly sweet carbonated water. I remember my grandpa adding Borjomi to everything to cut the sweetness and make homemade juices and soda lighter and more refreshing or just mixing it with some honey to make it healthier
Re-Fresh was what I a.k.a Sofia and my friend Salome and our friends were looking for in a beverage; fresh lemonade from natural ingredients, something not so sweet like everything else out there. But not so dull and lifeless like flavoured seltzers and waters, or artificial, like diet drinks. This is our history..
We founded the company in 2017 with the idea to promote freshly squeezed juices in Georgia and for that, we have teamed up with one of the world leaders in industrial juicing equipment, Spanish Zummo corp. In summer 2018 in collaboration with supermarket chain Nikora, we made ‘Fresh Corners’ in Tbilisi and Batumi. One of the fundamental decisions was to use only local fruits to promote local produce and farmers. So at the end of that year and the beginning of 2019 we were travelling around the villages of Guria, Adjara and Samegrelo the citrus region of Georgia meeting with farmers and collecting organic citrus, feijoa and buckthorn, preparing for the next working season, all was just peachy as they say. The pandemic caught us with a huge amount of fruit on our hands and total lockdown. PROBLEM. But as they say, problems are the price you pay for progress. In the midst of this havoc, we set out to create a culinary-minded beverage by replacing artificial ingredients with real juice and real flavour extracts, in refreshing flavour varieties and natural sweeteners. Being exposed to the exciting advancements of craft beers, boutique wines and small-batch spirits, we noticed a lack of creativity in the non-alcoholic beverage market. Dominated by a few big players and defined by a stagnant cast of artificial flavours, we saw lemonade as the perfect vehicle to carry over the attention to detail and quality sourcing of the craft beverages we admired.
Our first exposure was at the local Taste Tbilisi Street Food Festival in the Summer of 2020 where we were selling our lemonades by the glass from a modest booth in Mushtaidi Park, constantly testing new flavours and subtly balancing our beverages with input from the community. In early 2021, we managed to release shelf-stable bottles using only natural conservatives. At this point, we were still carbonating each batch individually by hand on the off hours of a local small brewery, and as we took on our first distributors and started to expand, we realized it was time to take the next step for our business.
Keeping production of our product in-house and maintaining the quality we had become known for, was the highest priority, but scaling our process was a challenge. We spent the rest of the year gaining experience by helping out at local breweries for knowledge of the equipment to develop our own unique production process. And now in 2022, we are in the process of building up our own production facility with greatly increased capacity and a production line tailored specifically for lemonade making.
We believe that food and drink bring people together and having quality non-alcoholic options are key to any celebration. Although we’ve grown a lot since our Food Fest days, we’re still making lemonade the way we always have, sourcing the best ingredients we can find and creating sophisticated, innovative beverages worthy of every toast, no matter what you like to drink. Each unique flavour is designed with a different sweetness and acidity level to pair perfectly with different cuisines for a less-sweet, full flavour drinking experience. We’re excited to continue to grow and share our passion with you!
